THE EARLY YEARS
I was born on the South Coast of England in Eastbourne. My Dad (Roy Rainey) was working in what were to become ICC studios, & Mum (Mildred) was a singer/songwriter. Around that time an opportunity came up for them to travel with an evangelist called Dick Saunders every summer around the UK.

They joined the ‘Way to life’ team when I was about two years old, (which is also about the time they moved back to Northern Ireland where I went on to grow up.)

During the winter months, Mum and Dad worked in the recording studio that they had set up in the Birches where we lived, and from May until September every year, we would pack up and live in a caravan whilst touring around the UK telling people the wonderful truth that Jesus loved them. Thousands of people became Christians during those years.

It was also during that time that my own relationship with Jesus began, when I was just three years old - what an incredible journey that has been - just as fresh as when it started, and way more exciting now than ever!

SONGWRITING & GROWING UP
Maybe because my Mum wrote songs, I got into song writing early on - I thought everyone did it!

I was nine when I thought I should really get serious about it! - and so, I started on a musical about the prodigal son - start easy, that’s what I always say!! It’s kind of funny now, but it was that intrepid beginning that got me on the road of writing that I shall probably be on until the day I die - it’s part of what I was made for, and I love it.

I went through secondary school - Killicomaine Junior High, Portadown College, and Dominican College Portstewart - before deciding to go to Bible College when I was 19. That was a significant time in my life.

I started to grow up - I left home and moved to Cheshire in England (I studied Theology at the Elim Bible College - now Regent’s Theological College) - and my faith started to grow up too... now I was believing because I was deciding as an adult; I was wrestling it through for myself. Whilst that was not always an easy part of the journey, it was one that has firmly shaped who I’ve become as an adult. I’m so grateful for the days of doubt - they put conviction in my soul.

AL & KATE
One very important aspect of college, was that I met the most handsome man in the world!
After finishing college, Alan and I got married on 10th August, 1996 in St James’ church Glasgow. We knew that God had called us to church plant - but at that point we weren’t sure how He was going to do it!

We became assistant pastors of the South West Glasgow Vineyard, which was Alan’s home church, and together with senior pastors Jamie and Linda Watters, we started the adventure of ministry together.
Two years later, Jamie and Linda - who were not only great bosses, but wonderful friends - released us to go and plant a church of our own.
We moved back to Northern Ireland in 1998 - and the Causeway Coast Vineyard was born the following year.

Just a year before we moved home, I met and started being mentored by Brian Doerksen - he and Joyce and their 5 kids at the time (they had another one whilst living in London), had moved to the UK to oversee worship for the Vineyard churches here for a couple of years.

I had gone through a really dry patch with writing - I hadn’t written anything for three years, and I wasn’t sure that God would ever use me like that again. But in the midst of learning about writing and leading worship - I started to get ideas again. ‘Child of God’ was the first song I wrote after that period, and ‘Hungry’ was next.

Both those songs were recorded in 1999 by Vineyard Music and both of them spelled the start of a new season in my life in terms of writing and ministry. Sometimes it takes my breath away what God has done since. He really is an abundant God - we have no idea sometimes :)

Whilst everything with ‘Hungry’ was kicking off - things were starting to kick off at home too.

At first, Mum and Dad, my sister Janet, and brother Mark, Alan and me made up the whole congregation of our church. Soon, we started to grow. We had such a hunger to see people who didn’t know Jesus yet, find a safe place to belong, and discover for themselves how wonderful He is. As we started to grow, most of the people who came were already Christians - but what a gift to us!

After about 4 years of doing church, the Lord spoke to us about going after the lost, and that He would take care of the church. So, that’s what we did (and that’s just what He has done too!)

We celebrated our 10th anniversary as a church this May (2009), and are loving what God is doing. We are so thrilled to be a part of it.

MUSICALLY SPEAKING
At the moment, I’m working on my third album with Integrity Music.

I recorded ‘Satisfy’ in 2003, and ‘I Belong’ in 2007 - since then have had the most wonderful opportunities to lead worship more internationally - and of course, see our own family grow (we have 2 girls), and continue to lead the church.

Life is full - but that’s what Jesus said He came to do for us.. give us life, and to the max!
