May 25th is the day that 6-year old Etan Patz went missing 33 years ago in a Manhattan neighborhood, which spurred the nation into anxiety regarding children's safety. Etan disappeared while walking alone for the first time to the school bus stop, only two blocks away from his home. He is one of the first children's photo to appear on milk cartoons as part of the missing children's movement that began.
This case was recently brought back to life again. Sources reported that a 51 year old man residing in New Jersey confessed to murdering the child. Police questioned Hernandez for over three hours on Wednesday (May 23) and the self confessed suspect even gave a signed confession.
Though there were leads that led to a recent dig up of long time suspect Jose Ramos' Manhattan basement in April, the boy's body has still not been recovered yet. According to Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, the remains may never be found.
The parents of Etan still reside in the same apartment in the same neighborhood and have gone through so much pain. Will there finally be a closure to this decades-long mystery based on the current proceedings? We sure hope so.
According to scripture, children are a gift from God and a true blessing. We hope that this nation which was founded on the teachings of Christianity, can go back to its roots and protect and love the future generation well.
